They bought 128 acres but lost all but 28 during the depression.  Jane's mother was a talented musician and often played piano for Bob Schantz and church. Jane's father had a good voice and was part of a men's singing group well known in the Goshen area.Jane had two brothers, George William Dunning and John Dunning.  Jane's brother Bill spent his entire teaching career at Goshen High School in the Industrial Arts Department. Bill was the historian for the Goshen High School Alumni Association and the Goshen Historical Society.  Bill was among the first to be inducted into the GHS Alumni Hall of Fame. Jane's brother John became a botanist for the Department of the Interior located at NC State in Raleigh, NC.  They are both deceased but still have family in the area.

Jane attended all 12 years in the 1908 Goshen High School Building.  Jane started first grade with Joe Spaulding, who became her husband 15 years later.   Jane graduated from Goshen High School in 1952. Jane attended Miami University on a scholarship and attended two years in secretarial studies and then decided to put her studies to work.  Jane was married in 1955 while Joe was in the army. They lived in Columbia, South Carolina where Joe was stationed at Fort Jackson.  When Joe was discharged, they came back home to Goshen. Jane started working at GE while Joe went to Wilmington College on the GI Bill. Joe Spaulding became a teacher at Goshen and later the principal at the Goshen Junior High Building and then principal at the Joseph Spaulding Building , named in his honor for his many years of service to the school and community. Jane and Joe had three children. Mark was killed in an automobile accident as an infant. Mary Jo  was born in 1959 and Todd in 1963.

Jane was chosen to run the library at Cook Elementary School when Todd started first grade and stayed there until he graduated. During this time, she went back to Miami University and received an associate's degree in library science.
Jane left Cook Elementary and went to work at Cincinnati Electronics.  Jane worked there for 18 years and then started watching her grandchildren. Todd and Bobbie's Keith and Molly  as well as  Mary Jo's and Wayne's Nate and Diana.  When Jane's granddaughter Molly entered second grade, she began to volunteer at Marr and Cook Elementary Schools and is still working there today.  Jane and Joe now have a granddaughter named Grace. Joe and Jane live on the property where she grew up and says "we have our own commune as our son and nephew also live on the property".

Currently, Jane is an active  member of the Goshen Methodist Church, where she sings in the choir and has been the treasurer  of the United Methodist women for 50 years. Jane volunteers many hours at the food pantry, and helps make 4000 to 6000 candy Easter Eggs each year. Jane has helped with this fundraiser for  about 20 years. She also helps with the many church fish fries and spaghetti dinners.    Jane also does volunteer work for Kathryn Stagge Marr Park, the Lions Club, and the Goshen Historical Society where she also edits the newsletter. Jane also volunteers at the Goshen Public Library, where her favorite activity is shelving the books.  Once a month, Jane goes to Matthew 25 Ministries to help. She has made about 150 simple dresses for a Haiti project, as well as making baby quilts and knitting baby hats for the Bethesda Hospital.  In her free time, Jane's hobbies are reading, working puzzles and watching NCIS and Blue Bloods.

Jane comes from a long family tradition of volunteering and it is with great pleasure that we induct Mary Jane Dunning Spaulding into this year's Goshen High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame.  Jane was nominated by Candy Meadors.
